Losing water is the pool problem that gets ignored longest, because it is easy to tell yourself it is evaporation. This page covers what detection costs in California, how to tell a leak from normal loss before you pay anyone, and the thing most cost guides leave out.
Modern Pool & Repair connects Los Angeles homeowners with pool contractors. Nothing here is a quote.
The number, and the thing most guides leave out
In California, published 2026 figures for professional pool leak detection run $300 to $575. Nationally the range is wider, $100 to $1,000, because it covers above ground pools and simpler inspections. Pressure testing, which is usually the first step on an inground pool, is commonly quoted at $200 to $500.
Here is the part that catches people out: detection and repair are two different purchases. The figures above buy you an answer, not a fix. Underground plumbing repair in particular is its own job and can run from several hundred to several thousand depending on what is wrong and where it is. Some quotes include minor patching and some do not. Ask which you are getting before you book.

Is it actually a leak? The bucket test
Before paying anyone, spend a day ruling out evaporation.
- Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on a step so it is partly submerged.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it.
- Leave the pool running normally for 24 hours.
- Compare. If the pool dropped more than the bucket, you have a leak. If both dropped about the same, that is evaporation.
In a Los Angeles summer, losing a quarter inch a day to evaporation is unremarkable. Losing an inch a day is not.
Where pool leaks usually are
- The equipment pad. The cheapest and most common. Visible, above ground, and often a fitting or a seal rather than anything structural.
- The skimmer. Separation between the skimmer and the pool wall is extremely common and often shows as a level that stops dropping right at the skimmer mouth.
- Light niches and returns. Fittings and conduit penetrations.
- The shell. Cracks in the structure. The least common and the most serious, and pool repair covers what that work involves.
- Underground plumbing. The hardest to find and the reason detection is a specialist job.
Why a leak is worth finding quickly
Water is the least of it. A persistent leak washes out the soil under and around the shell, which causes settling, and it keeps the surrounding ground saturated, which affects decking and anything built on it. It also quietly wastes the chemicals and heat in the water you keep replacing.
And the order of operations matters if you were already planning work: find the leak first. What a pool remodel costs is the next question, not this one, because new finish over an unfound leak is a job paid for twice.
Common questions
Will resurfacing fix a leak?
Not reliably. New finish can close minor seepage, but a real leak should be found and repaired before a resurface, or you pay for the finish twice.
Does my water bill tell me anything?
Yes, if the pool is on an auto fill. A step change in water use with no change in habits is a good early signal.
Can a leak be found without draining the pool?
Usually, yes. Detection is normally done with the pool full, using pressure testing and listening equipment. Draining a pool to look for a leak can cause its own problems and is rarely the first step.
My pool only drops when the pump runs. Does that help?
A great deal, and tell whoever you call. Loss that happens only under pressure points at the return side; loss that happens only when the pump is off points elsewhere. That one observation can cut the search.
